Although I have been interested in art since a young child, my drawing journey in the art world only started with my 2011 New Year's Resolution, after many years procrastinating about wanting to learn to draw. I finally made the conscious decision to partake in a local pastel drawing. I joined other Toowoomba artists in a weekend workshop but I soon realised at that point that I needed to start at the very beginning ie. If I wanted to draw realistically I had to learn to draw firstly what I could see, not what I thought I could see. I hence purchased some graphite pencils, and have been hooked on graphite and also charcoal ever since.
So here I am, now 70 years young, starting out as an artist, after all this time, in what is a very exciting journey. I am seeing things around me for the first time and really looking at the way light and shapes affect what we see. We are surrounded by so much beauty; to try and capture that likeness and its simplistic beauty through art is what I am endeavouring to do.
I am enjoying working on a variety of genre; portraiture, pets and even an old run down truck have captured my interest of late but I particularly like the challenge of trompe l'oeil and landscapes too. My art work involves the use of graphite, but also sanguine as well as charcoal, in creating as realistic a piece as possible. I like the sense of realism, trying to achieve a piece of art that really looks like the real thing. More recently I have started working in pastels, but I do find it quite tricky understanding colour in particular what works with what hue and value. I have ventured more into colour recently, producing some works in pastel pencils as well as water colours along with ink.
I have now been involved in community exhibitions; taking part in the Downlands Art Exhibition in Toowoomba, Queensland Australia; Murray's Portraiture Competition also in Toowoomba, the local Hampton Food and Arts Festival as well as local shows and exhibitions. Holding an emerging artists' exhibition at Rosalie Gallery in Goombungee and opening my gallery to the public at the Instudio Art Trails have been highlights of my art career. Five years ago I joined the Artists of Crows Nest taking on the role as Secretary and as a member, been able to show my pieces at Nest Cafe, Rosalie House at Meringandan and Wendlands Fine Foods in Toowoomba. The Art group have held exhibitions at various galleries in the vicinity at which I have also displayed my work.
